Map Contact North West, West Midlands & The Isle of Man office

The North West covers a population of approximately 6.7 million people across Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, cheshire and Greater Manchester.  There are 24 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), 22 Acute Trusts and 1 ambulance service.  The Manchester CMACE office also covers the Isle of Man.  North Cumbria are for historia reasons included in the North East region.  There are around 85,500 births per year.

The regional office works closely with Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCB), Government Office North West and NHS North West.  We collect, coordinate and analyse data on child deaths within the North West region.

The West Midlands covers a poplation of 5.4 million people across Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Herefordshire, Sandwell, Shropshire, Solihull, Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent, Telford and Wrekin, Walsall, Warwickshire, Wolverhampton and Worcestershire.  There are 16 Primary Care Trusts and 1 Care Trust, 17 Acute Trusts.  There are around 69,000 births are year.

Wales has a population of approximately 3 million people.  There are around 33,000 births per year.  There are 10 NHS trusts and 1 ambulance service within the region.

Following the resignation of Jane Stewart as the Wales' CMACE Manager the Wales' office will be managed from the Manchester CMACE office.

Current work in Wales includes the maternal health enquiries: maternal mortality and obesity project, together with the children's health enquiry work.  Wales was one of the 5 areas that took part on the Why Children Die: a pilot study of child deaths in 2006.  CMACE are now continuing the children's work with its first topic based project focused on head injury in children up to age 15.

The perinatal mortality surveillance database continues to be managed by the All Wales Perinatal Survey (AWPS).  Perinatal mortality data regarding all babies from 24 weeks gestation to 28 days is downloaded from AWPS to CMACE from inclusion in its annual report and for distribution to local bodies in the form of Trust Specific and Health Board reports.  This dissemination will be carried out by CMACE Manchester office.

In addition to the work commissioned directly through the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) our regional office offers delivery of non-NPSA enquiry and dissemination work in the forms of:

  • Local review of maternal, perinatal and child mortality enquiries
  • A range of interactive workshops (see events page)
  • Collection of data and reporting for LSCBs
  • Bespoke local dissemination to in-service training programmes, educational departments and SHA/PCTs

For more information regarding any of the above please contact a member of the Manchester office team.
