CMACE in Northern Ireland is commissioned by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) through the Public Health Agency for Northern Ireland.

The work is governed regionally by a multidisciplinary steering group chaired by the Chief Medical Officer. Northern Ireland contributes to all the CEMACH work programmes, including the maternal death enquiry, perinatal mortality surveillance and was one of the pilot sites for the child death review project.

Northern Ireland has a growing population of approximately 1.75 million and has a resident birth rate of 24,451 (GRO 2007). As of April 2007, 5 Health and Social Care Trusts have replaced the previous 18 Trusts.

There are 10 inpatient maternity units and 5 neonatal units that provide neonatal intensive care.
