CMACE Ireland covers the Republic of Ireland and is funded by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Launched by the Minister for Health Mary Harney in April 2009, CMACE Ireland was developed with the support of The HSE, The Department of Health and Children (DOHC), The Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecologists and The State Claims Agency.
CMACE Ireland aims to undertake confidential enquiries into every maternal death for Irish residents and non residents whose death occurred in this region. The remit of the CMACE Ireland does not include child health enquiries.
CMACE Ireland request that all cases of maternal death occurring during or within one year of the pregnancy are reported to their office. Reporting a maternal death in Republic of Ireland, please click here for guidance. From January 2009, Irish Maternal Mortality data will be included in the CMACE UK Triennial Report.
For the year 2007 the Republic of Ireland had a population of approximately 4.25million (Central Statistics Office) and a birth rate of 71,963 (The National Perinatal Reporting System NPRS, The Economics and Social Research Institute ESRI August 2009).
Maternity Services
There are 20 maternity hospitals/units in ROI with 2 units facilitating 'alongside' midwifery led units. Another 5 maternity hospitals/units have linked 'DOMINO'/community midwife schemes or outreach antenatal clinics.
The ROI aslo has independent midwives who work independently of the maternity units to provide midwife led care for planned home births. This service accounted for 186 deliveries in 2007 (Health Research and Information Division, Perinatal Statistics Report, ESRI, Dublin 2009)
