Overview

The Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries (CMACE) is an independent charity. Its mission is to improve the health of mothers, babies and children by carrying out confidential enquiries and other related work on a UK wide basis and widely disseminating the results.

National Confidential Enquiry Programme
 
The elements of the national confidential enquiry programme carried out by CMACE are:
 
-          Maternal death enquiry
-          Child health enquiry projects

The main funding body for the national confidential enquiry programme is the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) which commissions the work for England and Wales. 

The other funding bodies for the national enquiry programme are:-
 
-          Northern Ireland DPSSPS through the Public Health Agency
-          NHS QIS Scotland
-          Republic of Ireland
-          States of Jersey and Guernsey
-          Isle of Man
 
Other CMACE Work
 
CMACE carries out a wide range of work funded by other bodies related to the achievement of it mission, these include:-
 
-          Child death data collection
-          Research and other projects
 
The bodies who contribute funding to enable CMACE to carry out local enquiries or provide mortality surveillance information include Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), NHS Trusts, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), Regional Government Offices and Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs). If you would like to find out more follow the relevant link above.

How We Are Organised

CMACE has a central office in Baker Street which also incorporates the regional office activity for London and South East. We also have local offices in Manchester, Sheffield and Cambridge and affiliated offices in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Republic if Ireland.

CMACE became an independent registered charity on 1st July 2009. It will have a board of 8 trustees to be appointed following a competitive process. In addition to the chair, the trustees will be four clinical professionals, two business professionals and one lay person.
